After conceding a 50-run first innings lead, host Odisha fought back with courage to beat Assam by five runs on the third and last day of their Vijay Merchant Trophy East Zone under-16 league match at Bidanasi ground here today. The win fetched Odisha six points, while Assam drew blank.
Chasing a modest target of 107 for victory, Assam were bundled out for 101. Suryakanta Samal and captain Mohammad Sahil Raja shared seven wickets in the second innings to paved the way for the Odisha win.
Earlier put into bat, the home boys were skittled out for a paltry 111 as only four batsmen could reach the double figures. Among the opposition bowlers, Akash Sengupta bagged five wickets for just 16 runs, while Jitumoni Kalita scalped four for 57. In reply, Assam made 161 to take the first innings lead.
Odisha put up better performance in the second innings as they rode on a half-century by in-form Rathunath Malla and his 65-run partnership for the second wicket with Y Srikant to compile a decent total of 156.
